About the Bruce Protocol

The Bruce Protocol is a standardized treadmill test used to assess cardiovascular fitness. It progressively increases speed and incline every 3 minutes until the participant reaches maximum effort.

Test Stages:

  • Stage 1: 1.7 mph, 10% grade (4.8 METs)
  • Stage 2: 2.5 mph, 12% grade (7.0 METs)
  • Stage 3: 3.4 mph, 14% grade (9.5 METs)
  • Stage 4: 4.2 mph, 16% grade (12.5 METs)
  • Stage 5: 5.0 mph, 18% grade (15.5 METs)
  • Stage 6: 5.5 mph, 20% grade (18.5 METs)
  • Stage 7: 6.0 mph, 22% grade (21.5 METs)

Interpretation:

  • Excellent: 15+ METs
  • Good: 12-14 METs
  • Average: 9-11 METs
  • Below Average: 6-8 METs
  • Poor: Below 6 METs
