5K Training Tips

The 5K (3.1 miles or 5 kilometers) is a popular distance for runners of all levels. It's short enough to be accessible but long enough to require both speed and endurance.

Training Zones:

  • Easy/Long Run: 5K pace + 60-90 seconds per mile
  • Marathon Pace: 5K pace + 45-60 seconds per mile
  • Threshold: 5K pace + 20-30 seconds per mile
  • 5K Race Pace: Your target race pace

Training Structure:

  • Easy Runs: 70-80% of weekly mileage at easy pace
  • Speed Work: Intervals at 5K pace or faster
  • Threshold Runs: Tempo runs at threshold pace
  • Long Runs: 20-25% longer than race distance
