About Carbon Equivalent

Carbon Equivalent (CE) is a measure used to assess the weldability and hardenability of steel alloys.

Standard CE Formula:

CE = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15

Weldability CE Formula:

CE = C + Mn/6 + Si/5 + Cr/5 + Mo/4 + V/5 + Ni/15

Hardenability CE Formula:

CE = C + Mn/4 + Si/4 + Cr/4 + Mo/4 + V/4 + Ni/8

CE Interpretation:

  • CE < 0.40: Excellent weldability
  • CE 0.40-0.50: Good weldability
  • CE 0.50-0.60: Fair weldability
  • CE > 0.60: Poor weldability

Applications:

• Welding procedure development
• Heat treatment planning
• Material selection
• Quality control
• Failure analysis

Factors Affecting CE:

• Alloying elements
• Carbon content
• Heat treatment
• Cooling rate
• Section thickness

Carbon Equivalent calculations help predict steel behavior during welding and heat treatment processes.
